Sofia’s metro takes another step forward.

A new metro station has opened in Terminal 2 of Sofia’s international airport, operating 7 days / week from 5am to midnight providing direct access from the city centre in 18 minutes.

Extremely affordable at 1 BGN per journey (0.50 Euros or 36p), it is a welcomed alternative to the 10 BGN taxi ride, which for foreigners just landing was often a confusing process involving dubious drivers and overinflated fares. A free shuttle now takes passengers between the terminals every 30 minutes, as such even if flying a low cost carrier from Terminal 1 you can still transit via the metro.

Simultaneously, the new Mladost Business Park station opened too: the workplace of an ever growing number of 11,000+ employees of international companies, making the area and ever stronger choice for property investors (see here). The next station scheduled for completion by the end of 2015 is on Cherni Vrah Blvd, where the Paradise Centre shopping mall is located and Silver City complex.

Future plans not yet commissioned include a station in Simeonovo (by Ikea), which will enable skiers to arriving at Sofia airport to take the metro for 15 minutes and get straight onto the ski gondola at Simeonovo for direct transfer up the mountain to Vitohsa ski resort. Few capitals can boast such facilities, Sofia’s potential slowly and steadily is becoming reality.
